Acupuncture may help relieve seasonal allergies

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Acupuncture may help relieve seasonal allergy symptoms in some people with runny noses and watery eyes, according to a recent study out of Germany – but the effect seems to be small.

Researchers studied the effect of acupuncture over eight weeks and reported a decrease in allergy symptoms, according to Fox News.

The exact mechanism is not known or even clear; however, the researchers believe that it may be due to an effect on the immune system.

In some cases, it appeared a reduction in the amount of allergy medications might be possible, they said.

They suggested that acupuncture might be helpful when combined with Western treatments.

But they said that patients should discuss with their allergist before changing or stopping any medications.

Hair dyes linked to cancer causing chemicals

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Hair dyes that are being used by millions of women contain chemicals that are linked to cancer, scientists have warned.

They say that both home hair colouring kits and the dyes, which are used at expensive salons pose a potential risk to women’s health.

The warning comes from scientists at Leeds-based company Green Chemicals, who conducted a review of the chemistry surrounding hair dye.

They warn that chemicals called secondary amines, which are either found in all permanent hair dyes or are formed in them, can penetrate the skin and stay on hair for weeks, months or even years after the dye is applied, the Daily Mail reported.

Over time, the chemicals can react with tobacco smoke and exhaust fumes, to form highly poisonous chemicals called N-nitrosamines.

Is coffee drinking related to mortality?

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

As coffee drinking increased, the risk of death decreased.

This is what a large study of nearly half a million older adults followed for about 12 years has found.

Study author Neal Freedman, PhD, MPH, National Cancer Institute, discusses the significance of these findings and the potential links between coffee drinking, caffeine consumption, and various specific causes of disease in an interview in Journal of Caffeine Research, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Dr. Freedman examines the relationship between coffee drinking and behaviors such as smoking and alcohol abuse, the physiological effects of caffeine on blood pressure and cardiac function, and the importance of differentiating between the effects of coffee and caffeine.
