Most of us believe in the ‘power’ of alcohol during winters. The common belief is that alcohol keeps you warm. For some of us it is just another excuse to drink.

If you still think alcohol keeps you warm, here is the some bad news. Alcohol does nothing to keep your body warm. You might be wondering how this can be true. You might even think, ‘When I drink I feel warmer’. According to the Swiss institute for the prevention of alcohol and drug problems alcohol only gives you an illusion of being warm!

There are many heat sensing nerves on the surface of your skin. Alcohol brings your blood to the surface of your body. This gives you a false feeling of being warm. Also, this cools your blood and allows cold to enter your body. Sigh, now this is the reverse of what you want. Even one sip of brandy can bring your blood to the surface.

So if you want to feel warm go hug your dog because it will work better than drinking.

Let’s define one unit of alcohol

One unit of alcohol is approximately equal to10ml by volume of pure alcohol. This is also equivalent to half a pint of ordinary strength beer.

How much should you drink?

Though the amount of alcohol consumption depends on many factors such as gender, age, medical history and even your origin etc. There are few basic guidelines you should follow.

Men: Men should not drink more than twenty one units a week and four units a day. Also, there should be at least two alcohol-free days.

Women: Fourteen units a week and three units a day with at least two alcohol-free days is the approximate limit for women.

You should not be drinking if:

  • You are pregnant or trying to conceive
  • You have family history of alcohol related disorders
  • You are underweight or suffer from malnutrition
  • You are suffering from depression
  • You have sleeping problems or some mental disorders
  • You are driving
  • You chose not to drink ever.

The drink and drive saga

It was never cool to drink in the first place and drinking and driving is a total no-no. Alcohol makes you think that you are more alert but in fact it slows down your reflexes. As your senses become slow you lose your sense of speed and time. This is enough to explain the raise in number of accident these days.

Remember, donate blood but not to the road. Do not drink and drive.

Chemically speaking alcohol is a solution, but remember, it is not ‘the’ solution to anything.
