Hair extensions causing young women to lose hair

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

Increasing use of hair extensions among young women is leading to hair loss at an earlier age, according to UK’s biggest provider of cosmetic surgery.

The pull from hair extensions can lead to ‘alopecia traction,’ which causes the hair to eventually fall out as it has undergone increased tension, according to experts at cosmetic specialist company Transform.

The company also noted that more women are losing than ever and at a younger age, the Daily Express reported.

It revealed that it has had a 41 per cent increase in female hair loss enquiries in the past year, and a 24 per cent increase in female hair transplants.

The average age of female hair loss patients is down from 51 years in 2010 to 34 years in 2013, it added.

According to Transform hair surgeon Mabroor Bhatty, hair loss and its treatment is now becoming less taboo and he asserted that those who are bold enough to speak out about it should be commended.

Daily sunscreen slows skin ageing

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

The daily use of sunscreen significantly shows the ageing of skin, and also helps prevent skin cancer, a new study has suggested.

The world-first study of 900 young and middle-aged men and women showed that after four and a half years, those who applied sunscreen most days had no detectable ageing of the skin.

They also had 24 per cent less skin ageing than people who used sunscreen only some of the time, if at all.

The study was led by Queensland Australian of the Year, Queensland Institute of Medical Research’s Professor Adele Green, in collaboration with investigators at the University of Queensland’s School of Population Health.

“This has been one of those beauty tips you often hear quoted, but for the first time we can back it with science: protecting yourself from skin cancer by using sunscreen regularly has the added bonus of keeping you looking younger,” Professor Green said.
