Chewing gum can boost concentration
Chewing gum can help people focus on tasks that requires continuous monitoring over a longer amount of time, scientists have claimed.
They asked volunteers to listen to a list of numbers being read out for half hour and note down whenever there was an odd-even-odd sequence, the Daily Express reported.
The study found that those who chewed gum during the task had quicker reaction times and achieved more accurate results than others.
Kate Morgan of Cardiff University said the participants who didn’t chew gum performed slightly better at the start of the task but were overtaken at the end.
It is believed that as many as eight areas of the brain are affected by the simple act of chewing.
One explanation to this phenomenon is that chewing leads to temporary improvements in blood flow to brain cells.
The findings have been published in the British Journal of Psychology.
