Eating healthy this Holi!

holi_02_240x240Holi is a festival of colours and the vibrant aura and playful mood adds to the spirit of tradition. With tradition comes our love for delicious food and like every other festival, Holi does have its personal favourites when it comes to delicacies. Sugar, maida, starch, ghee, cream and other fats, mostly deep fried comprise the final dishes of this festivity. No doubt they taste above all but when it comes to our health we know we need to make healthier choices.

This time Dietician Priyam Ahuja allows you to eat your traditional Holi favourites with a slight magical twist added to each to make it not just healthy but also tempting and tasty.

HOLI TREAT 1: GUJIYA
Holi is incomplete without Gujiya. This Holi have gujiya but make a healthier selection of the stuffing. Add loads of dry fruits to the stuffing which shall not only make it healthy but shall maintain festivity delicacy as well. Baked Gujiya with dry fruits stuffing is my pick for the authentic Holi treat.

HOLI TREAT 2: BESAN KE LADDOO
Then comes Besan ke laddoo. Now the trick here is to have ladoos made of roasted yellow chana. It adds on to the protein and does not require too much of ghee as does besan and still be the best besan laddoo. In-fact I would suggest you to use natural sweetener like stevia and cut off on sugar totally if you are diabetic or keep it sweet with sugar but say goodbye to excess ghee.

HOLI TREAT 3 : KACHODI
If you love Kachodi, how about baking a green chana and peas kachodi to add on to the ethnic yet exotic touch. I totally love kachodi and I ensure my Health is still given a priority with the baked and not deep fried version of this spicy Holi love.

HOLI TREAT 4: TIKKI CHHOLE
Tikki chhole is another favorite item of Indians, esp. North Indians, on Holi and this time we shall alter the Tikki stuffing. We will have minimal potatoes, for binding with loads of carrots, beetroot and paneer added to it, cover the stuffing roll with healthy oats and stir fry instead of deep frying. Add in yoghurt and cooked chhole and I promise taste won’t be compromised but it would definitely get healthy.

HOLI TREAT 5 : BARFI
Barfi especially Kaju Katli and Kaju Pista rolls are mostly bought from the shops during Holi to serve our guest and gift our relatives, Barfi however, is very easy to prepare and you can keep a track of your health by ensuring you use nothing but the best ingredients here. When it comes to nuts and health, cashew isn’t really a healthier option of the lot, hence, we should choose our Barfi ingredient wisely and prefer Pistachio, Almond, Figs, Dates as they do justice to both the nutrition and taste. Pista barfi, Badam barfi are better than Kaju barfi in the health aspect.

Anjeer barfi rolls and Khajoor barfi are on my priority list as they themselves are so sweet that they do not really require any addition of sugar, are loaded with healthy calories and are really quick to prepare.

HOLI TREAT 6 : THANDAI
No, I couldn’t have missed on this. Bhaang and Thandai are loved, relished and enjoyed by almost all Holi Lovers. We certainly know that Bhaang isn’t really a good choice for our body and hence, its best to avoid and opt for the alternative of Thandai without Bhaang added to it. A Low Cal Thandai prepared at home is the perfect intersection of tradition and Health provided you ensure its made using slim milk, has more of almond as the Thandai ingredient and there is no Bhaang goli added to it in any form.

Holi is a festival of celebration and I wish each family celebrates it with full zest and zeal. We all consider being healthy a difficult task cause we always associate it to depriving our body of our favourite foods, It’s time we understand that we certainly should enjoy each and every dish but with slight alterations. Remember Moderation is always the key to Good Health.
