Dr Rashmi Shetty also known as the ‘Bollywood Doctor’, Dr Rashmi Shetty is a dermatologist with over 12 years of experience in the field of beauty and aesthetics. With high-profile clients ranging from film and television stars, to corporate bigwigs, she knows a thing or two about hair and skincare.

Dr Shetty is also an expert advisor with the Parachute Advansed Knowledge Centre and was kind enough to spend time with us at mDhil and give us some great tips on using coconut oil to keep your skin and hair hydrated.

Dr Rashmi Shetty’s summer skin care advice

It’s most important to keep your skin clean in the summer. Shower twice a day, making sure you keep the folds and creases of your skin clean.

Use a moisturiser with an SPF of 20 and keep your skin protected.

You may have noticed stars or pluses on some of your beauty products. These refer to the ‘Tan Protection Index’ of the product. Using a product with 2 – 3 stars or pluses should be enough to give you the right amount of protection.

There’s a difference between hydration and moisture and Dr Shetty lies to emphasis on the ‘hydration’ part of skincare.
In the winter, we rub oils into our skin after our shower. In the summer, make this a pre-bath practice:
- Start with a gentle application of coconut oil all over your face and body, before your bath.
- A few minutes before your shower should be fine. If you have the luxury of time, apply it half an hour before your shower.
- Coconut oil has a very light chain in its chemical ingredients. Which is why, when you shower, only the top coat gets washed away and the right amount penetrates your skin to keep it hydrated.
- Dr Shetty even recommends it for the face, as a form of hydration and anti-aging tool.
- Remember, if you have acne or suffer from an extremely oily skin, you must be careful. Don’t apply it in case you have acne on your face right now.

After sun-care protection

Often, in spite of applying sunscreen before going out, our skin becomes red and irritable after prolonged exposure. When you come back, you must wash your face with plenty of cold water to help to soothe and calm the skin. Follow this up with calamine lotion or a mud-pack.

Lots more skincare tips for the summer, right here.

Dr Rashmi Shetty’s summer hair care advice

We always think of the sun being bad for the skin, but it can also be very bad for the hair. Sun exposure to the hair can have an adverse affect on the hair. For instance, when people with coloured hair go to the beach and are out in the sun, their colour changes and fades. This is proof of how harsh the UV rays of the sun can be, even on our hair.

If you have coloured hair, use specially formulated hair and colour protecting shampoos.

Coconut oil provides great protection for your hair. You can apply it before shampooing and then wash and condition your hair as usual.

If you like to leave apply oil after shampooing, consider using a lighter version of the coconut oil. This works like a thin coat of protection.

In the summer, hair swells due to humidity and with coconut oil your cuticles (the outermost layer of the hair shaft) remain well protected.

If you’re in north India, which has more of a dry heat, you have to be mindful of the fact that sun is harsher and the dry wind or loo that blows can really damage your hair. The damage really shows in the rough ends of the hair. As protection, you must oil your hair well, from root to tip.

The good doctor advocates massages. It tingles your scalp, improves circulation and gives you an overall feeling of wellness and rejuvenation. However, it is best to avoid massages if you have dandruff or some other skin infection.

Dr Rashmi Shetty holds an MBBS degree from Mysore University, FRSH London, Diploma in Cosmetology, Chester, United Kingdom. She currently practices in Mumbai and has in the past trained under famed plastic surgeon, Dr KS Shekhar.

Here’s a list of foods that men must include in their diet.

Here’s what you should be eating

While there are some foods that we must all eat, men and women have different dietary requirements — met by different foods.

Men’s diet: The must eats

Blueberries

Blueberries have been linked to reduced risk of prostate cancer, owing to high levels of proanthocyanidins (a subtype of flavonoids). The benefits of blueberries does not end there, research also suggests that this fruit can reduce risk of heart disease, age-related memory loss and type-2 diabetes — all of which – typically effect more men than women.

Brazil nuts

Snacking on nuts in general is good for the heart and skin. Brazil nuts, however, are particularly good for men as they have a high selenium content, which is known to enhance sperm health and mortality.

Selenium also helps reduce LDL or bad cholesterol and acts as mood enhancer.

Cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprout

Cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprout are some important veggies that every man must include in his diet. These veggies are known to contain cancer-fighting chemicals, which are known to cut risk of prostate and colorectal cancer in men.

So add them in plenty in your daily diet.

Tomatoes

This popular fruit has many benefits for men. Lycopene (a phytochemical) is known to lower cholesterol, cut risk of colorectal cancer and heart disease.

Studies show that men who regularly eat food rich in lycopene have lesser chances of developing prostate cancer.

Eggs

If you’re prone to hair loss, then look no further. Eggs, an excellent source of protein and biotin (vitamin B7) boosts hair growth. Additionally, egg yolks are a good source of iron, which research suggests helps alleviate hair loss caused by anaemia.

Pomegranate

Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and studies show that eating pomegranate regularly can help lower cholesterol, a problem common to many men.

Many studies also suggest that drinking a glass of pomegranate juice daily ca slow down the progress of prostate cancer.

Garlic

Garlic’s heart health boosting properties are well known, it helps lower cholesterol, reducing chances of blockage. Further, research findings published in the Journal of National Cancer Institute suggests that regularly eating garlic and onions cuts risk of prostate cancer. So include them in your diet today.

Salmon

Salomon, a sea fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help treat the cause of many common health ailments in men. It not only helps reduce LDL or bad cholesterol, it also helps alleviate depression and cuts risk of prostate and colorectal cancer.

Whole grains

Whole grains pack in a host of vitamins, minerals and fibre – good for both men and women. However, it’s the B vitamins that particularly benefit men.

Vitamin B9 (folate) helps keep sperm healthy, vitamin B7 (biotin) helps reduce hair loss. Silica, also found in whole grains aids healthy hair growth.

Read on

It wasn’t a long time back when a shovel and a bag of seeds were enough to make you sustainable and happy. But now, with all the gizmos and gadgets piling up, mankind has resorted to finding relaxation in playing a video game or downloading new apps. With all the hustle and bustle around, the today’s man is under more stress than the man of yesterday. And that’s exactly when gardening comes into play.

Studies show that spending a few quiet minutes in a ‘green’ area could make you feel calmer, relaxed and get you into a better frame of mind.

Snip, snap

Trying to shed some extra kilos? Here’s the good news! Researches confirm that the energy expenditure that occurs during gardening actually helps melt the belly fat. An hour of moderate gardening can burn around 300-400 calories. Mowing the grass on your lawn is similar to a brisk walk, and bending and stretching while gardening is compared to spending a few minutes in an aerobic class. Also, elderly people have a lower risk of osteoporosis if they garden regularly, researchers add.

Healthy crunch

If you’re growing food in your garden, it’s just another reason to rejoice! Since you’ve grown the veggies, you’ll know what’s on your plate. The produce that you pick up off supermarket shelves is loaded with pesticides and insecticides, which are potentially dangerous and pose health risks in the long term. Using your own garden produce ensures that you’re eating the right thing.

Get wise

The more you garden, the more knowledge you gain. How? It’s obvious enough. As time passes, you would probably have a better idea of the flowering of plants, their water and fertilizer requirement, sunlight and other factors. You could also consider picking up a botany course if you fall in love with gardening. You’ll be amazed at how much you already know.

The creative expression

Gardening serves as an excellent outlet for your creative expression. People expressing their creativity are much more likely to be satisfied and contented with their lives than any other people.

Emotional factor

Plants do make you healthier by releasing a good amount of oxygen which helps keep your organs happy. However, gardening as a hobby has more benefits for your emotional being than one. It helps develop your concentration power, stay focused and best of all, combats stress and negative energies to an unimaginable level. No wonder it turns out that gardening people are more cheerful and happy than others.

And with that comes body odour. Fortunately there are ways to combat this problem and stay fresh even on the most humid days.

Sniff, sniff, is that me?

Body odour can make any one very self-conscious; turn off those around and generally cause some very awkward moments. Since persistent body odour carries a social cost, it needs to be tackled quickly. Sniff out the problem and take necessary steps to check it.

What is body odour?

Body odour or bromhidrosis happens due to growth of bacteria on the body. As sweat increases, bacteria multiply fast and cause body odour. Sweat has no smell of its own. The odour comes from other factors like gender, genetics, health, diet, medication etc. It varies from person to person and is unique to each individual, which is why sniffer dogs are used to track down a person involved in a crime.

Common causes for body odour:

• Ill health and lack of hygiene can cause body odour.

• When the liver and kidneys do not perform well, toxins linger in the body, and they make their way out through the pores on the skin.

• Constipation is a common cause of body odour.

• Strong spicy food (onion and garlic) can also cause body odour.

• Tobacco can give you bad breath, as can alcohol. Even strong medicines like antibiotics leave traces in the body which a sensitive nose can catch.

Prevention and treatment of body odour:

There are some simple things you can do to deal with body odour.

• Eat healthy food that contains lots of fibre, whole grains, wheat, soy products and vegetables.

• Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.

• Wear soft and absorbent cotton clothes in the summer.

• Body odour clings to clothes. Wash your clothes everyday, especially socks and undergarments. Try not to repeat the same outfit without washing.

• Wash hair frequently.

• If your underarms sweat a lot, consider defuzzing and avoid sleeveless clothes.

• Vinegar can neutralise underarm odour. Apply white vinegar doused in cotton (not on freshly shaved skin as it may sting).

• You could also go in for a deodorant or antiperspirant. There are many varieties available in the market today – from sprays to roll-ons. Find one that suits your lifestyle and apply it on your underarms after your morning shower. It might also be a good idea to carry it to work or college and freshen up at some point during the day.

• Apply eau de cologne to pulse points, to mask odour.

• To smell fresh add a teaspoon of alum or rock salt or Epsom salt to bath water.

• You could also use aroma oils in bath water.

• Use antibacterial soap or herbal soaps while bathing.

• Keep feet clean and dry. Dust with foot powder. Wear well-ventilated footwear in summers.

• If possible, wash your underarms, groin and feet often to keep them clean and prevent odour.

The study funded by the Endocrine Fellows Foundation in Washington, D.C., the National Institutes of Health and the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center, suggested that regularly skipping breakfast over time may lead to chronic insulin resistance and thus could increase an individual”s risk for type 2 diabetes.

Elizabeth Thomas, MD, an endocrinology fellow at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, and co-workers studied nine nondiabetic women, with an average age of 29, who were overweight or obese.

Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either breakfast or no breakfast at the first visit and the opposite at the second visit.

Four hours later, all subjects ate the same standardized lunch at each visit. They had blood samples taken every 30 minutes after lunch for three hours to test their insulin and glucose levels.

The researchers found that the women”s insulin and glucose levels after lunch were significantly higher on the day they skipped breakfast than on the day when participants ate breakfast.

According to Thomas, the higher levels demonstrated acute insulin resistance because of skipping breakfast.

The research was presented Sunday at the Endocrine Society’s 95th Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

An Pan, Ph.D., of the National University of Singapore, and colleagues analyzed data from three Harvard group studies and followed up 26,357 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study; 48,709 women in the Nurses” Health Study; and 74,077 women in the Nurses” Health Study II. Diets were assessed using food frequency questionnaires.

During more than 1.9 million person-years of follow-up, researchers documented 7,540 incident cases of T2DM.

The study found that increasing red meat intake during a four-year interval was associated with an elevated risk of T2DM during the subsequent four years in each cohort.

The results indicate that compared with a group with no change in red meat intake, increasing red meat intake of more than 0.50 servings per day was associated with a 48 percent elevated risk in the subsequent four-year period.

Reducing red meat consumption by more than 0.50 servings per day from baseline to the first four years of follow-up was associated with a 14 percent lower risk during the subsequent entire follow-up.

The study was published online first by JAMA Internal Medicine.

Hi,

I am a 29 year old working woman. I have been married recently. My details are:
Height: 165 cms
Weight:64 kgs

I want to shed 8-10 kgs .I usually don’t exercise but I used to be an active person earlier. I can still walk long distances and take the stairs without getting breathless. But I don’t get time for long workouts. I need an exercise plan and a healthy diet to lose weight. Also, I must inform you that i work in night shifts( 5:30 pm to 2:30 pm). Please advice on a diet that suits my lifestyle.

Thanks,
Nabonita Majumdar

Nabonita, your present BMI is 23.5. Bringing your weight down by 8 kilos will bring your BMI to 20.5 which would be close to the lower limit. I hope you are aware of this.

Yes, exercise is a big part of losing weight. You could do it in the mornings and evenings in two sessions or in a single session, totaling one hour.

Breakfast 2 idlis, with sambar or a cup of upuma or 2 dry dosas, one large orange or half grapefruit, tea or coffee or if you want something quick have a glass of oats with low fat milk and a banana cut into it.

Lunch is 3 rotis with dal/non veg curry, a plate of greens, 1/2 cup fat free curds, 2 dates or a small guava

Evening green or regular tea or coffee

Since you leave for work at 5, you may need to carry your dinner with you.
2 slices of whole wheat bread sandwich with egg or low fat cheese/paneer and an apple, pears or orange

2 walnuts or 6 almonds or a tablespoon of peanuts.

Because you work at night is not a reason for eating at night. And your total sleep in the day should not be more than 7 or 8 hours.

Do get back to me if you have any further doubts.

Send in your questions on nutrition to bawarchieditor@sify.com now! And don’t forget to include `Nutrition FAQ` in the subject line.

Following some simple steps may help people reduce their risk of developing skin cancer, the most common form of cancer, says expert.

The easiest way to prevent skin cancer is to protect your skin with clothing, said board-certified dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD, consulting professor at Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, N.C.

He suggests carrying a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses before going outside.

Wearing a long-sleeved shirt and pants also can help protect from the damaging rays of the sun, he added.

In addition, Dr. Draelos shares these additional tips for preventing skin cancer:

Apply sunscreen every day – When you are going to be outside, even on cloudy days, apply sunscreen to all skin that will not be covered by clothing. Reapply approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Use a broad- spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that protects the skin against both UVA and UVB rays and that has an SPF of at least 30.

Seek shade – Remember that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.

Use extra caution near water, sand or snow as they reflect and intensify the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chances of sunburn.

Get vitamin D safely. Eat a healthy diet that includes foods naturally rich in vitamin D, or take vitamin D supplements. Do not seek the sun.

If you want to look tan, consider using a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it. Don’t use tanning beds because just like the sun, UV light from tanning beds can cause wrinkling and age spots and can lead to skin cancer.

Check your skin for signs of skin cancer – Checking your skin and knowing your moles are key to detecting skin cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.

“It’s critically important for people to see their board-certified dermatologist if they notice a mole or skin lesion that is changing, growing or bleeding,” said Dr. Draelos.

“Skin cancer can be easily treated if detected early,” he asserted.

Choose biscuits made of whole-wheat flour instead of refined flour.

You don’t have to deprive yourself of all things tasty, if you’re battling cholesterol, diabetes, weight or blood pressure – to name a few. Simple, everyday replacements for what you’re eating can significantly impact your health and wellbeing. These healthy food substitutes will allow you to still get all the flavour and satisfaction you’re used to.

Easy, healthy food substitutes:

IN: Red rice

OUT: White rice

Red rice has far more nutritional benefits over white rice that most of us are used to eating. Dr Jyothi Prasad, practicing dietitian at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore says, “Red rice has more fibre in comparison to white rice, as white rice is stripped off its fibre and vitamins during the refining process.” And red rice is a safer option for diabetics too.

IN: White meat (chicken and fish)

OUT: Red meat (mutton, beef, pork and organ meat like liver and heart)

When it comes to non-vegetarian options, choose chicken and fish over mutton, beef or organ meat like liver. Chicken and fish (white meat) is far healthier than beef, mutton and pork (red meat).

Dr Prasad explains, “white meat has less fat and cholesterol than red meat. It gives the same amount of protein with an added advantage of lesser fat.” Dr Prasad stresses that fish provide essential fatty acids, which are heart friendly, and also aid brain development in children.

IN: Skimmed milk

OUT: Whole milk

Choose slim milk over whole milk. Here’s why! “Skimmed milk has less fat, which means it can help keep your weight under check. In the run long it is more heart friendly,” advises Dr Prasad. This is strictly not advisable in the case of growing children, unless there are concerns about obesity.

IN: Fresh fruit juice

OUT: Colas, energy drinks and fruit concentrates

Give the colas and energy drinks a break, and reach out to fresh fruit juices. Colas, energy drinks and the various other concentrated juices available in the market, contain noting more than sugar and calories. Further, energy drinks, Dr Prasad warns, contains caffeine, which isn’t good either. Dr Prasad advises one to opt for fresh fruit juices instead, “they pack in vitamins, minerals and a little bit of fibre too.” Even packages juices, as long as they are free of sugar, are a better choice. So chuck those colas today!

IN: Whole-wheat flour and multi-grain flour

OUT: Refined flour or maida

Refined flour, maida, only has carbs and no other nutrients, which means calories sans benefits. So pick whole-wheat flour instead. Whole-wheat flour packs in proteins, vitamins and fibre, which are all extremely beneficial. So choose cakes, bread, biscuits and rotis made of whole-wheat flour/ multi-grain flour, available aplenty in the market today.

IN: Citrus juices, spices and herbs’ dressing

OUT: Oil dressings

Citrus juices, spices and herbs’ dressing is any day healthier than oil dressings, even if you’re using the heart-healthy oil, olive oil. “Spices, herbs and lime juice add zing to your salads without adding the extra calories that oily dressings do,” Dr Prasad says.

IN: Herbs, citrus juices and spices

OUT: Salt

Cut your salt, and supplement it with herbs, citrus juices and spices. “Adding too much salt is detrimental to your health, it can put you at risk of blood pressure and more. So cut down your salt intake by adding herbs, citrus juices and spices to add to the taste,” suggests Dr Prasad.

IN: Egg whites

OUT: Whole eggs

Egg whites are any day better than eating whole eggs: “Egg yolk is a rich source of cholesterol and must be completely eliminated if one has complaints of high cholesterol or has a family history of heart disease,” says Dr Prasad. However, in the case of children, whole eggs are more a better bet any day.

This week’s answers:

Dear Sir,

My eyes becomes dry quickly, I have to use lubricated eye drops couple of times. It makes hard to work, I constantly work with computers due to dryness I can not concentrate to work sometimes.

Also I have puffiness under my eyes.

I weigh about 53 kg. My age is 34 years.

I drink about 1.5 to 2 liters of water everyday, is that enough? should
there be different water intake based season like summer or winter?

Please suggest remedy.

Thank you.
vipul parekh

Hi Vipul,

Please improve your water intake to 3 liters. Once a hour remove your eyes from computer and try to focus a distant object. Ayurveda recommends a special therapy for dry eyes. Netra/ Akshi Tarpana or Netra Basti: Eyes are the most delicate organ in the body and are also the most useful parts; then how can Ayurveda forget for care of these organs. Ayurveda indicated special care for eyes under “Netra/ Akshi Tarpana”. Here “Netra/ Akshi” stands for eyes and “Tarpana” for the nourishment. In this procedure also Basti Puta is prepared around the eyes so this procedure is also called as the “Netra Basti”.

Procedure:

Before making a Basti Puta around the eyes gentle facial massage followed by steam is given so that all the channels associated with the eyes open up and we get much more enhanced results.

Then Basti Puta is prepared around the eyes as shown in the image with black gram dough.

After ensuring a leakage proof Basti Puta; lukewarm medicated ghee or oil is poured in the eyes. Be cautious temperature of Ghee/ oil should not be high otherwise patient might loss his eyes.

Luke warm ghee/ oil have better penetrating power and nourish the eye tissues deeply. Low temperature ghee will do nothing and a high temperature could have very drastic consequences so special attention should be given to this aspect.

Medicated Ghee should be recycled four to five times (about 20 – 25 minutes) after heating so that the oil inside the puta remains Luke warm.

Patient should blink his eyes frequently and should make upwards, downwards and side to side movements of cornea with out moving eye brows. After completion of procedure facial massage special around nose and eyes should be given followed by Ayurveda herbal steam.

Indications:

Dry Eyes
Stress and strain in eyes
Irritation in eyes,
Fatigue
Frequently changing no. of glasses
Decreasing vision

Dear sir,

I am losing hair for past few months,I tried English medicines but no use they are saying it an androgenic allopecia. I have an grey hair from childhood onwards and i stopped dying it from few months because of hair loss.

So,please can u suggest an treatment for that and grey hair.

Ashok Pothina

Hi Ashok,

In my experience, Vitamin D deficiency and reduced thyroid functions lead to sudden alopecia. Please check these two parameters.

Classification of Hair (Ayurveda)

Ayurveda has classified the hair type according to the three basic body types—vata, pitta and kapha. According to Ayurveda, people falling under any of these body types have different hair features as per their doshas. Let us discuss the hair properties of people with respect to vata, pitta and kapha constitutions.

Hair of People with Vata Constitution

The hair of people with predominantly vata type of constitution is generally dark, coarse, wiry, inky, and frizzy. Such type of hair gets tangled easily and is prone to be dull with split ends. Such hair also has the possibility of dandruff infection.

Hair of People with Pitta Constitution

The hair of people with predominantly pitta type of constitution is generally brown, blonde, light, fine and silky. People with pitta constitution face problems like premature graying of hair and premature baldness. Such hair with a dominance of pitta tends to become oily particularly in hot and dry weather. This situation also leads to the dullness of hair.

Hair of People with Kapha Constitution

The hair of people with predominantly kapha type of constitution are generally dark or light, thick, heavy, wavy, and slightly oily. The hair of people with kapha constitution is lustrous.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair is nourished by the nutrient plasma, which is produced by the metabolic processing of the food we consume. The healthy nutrient plasma is responsible for the nourishment of the hair. According to Ayurveda, excess of pitta dosha (heat) in the body is the chief cause of hair problems. There are various other reasons for hair loss as mentioned below:

Hormonal imbalance in men and women is an important cause of hair loss. In men, a high concentration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair follicles causes hair fall. In women, hormonal imbalances both during pregnancy and after delivery cause hair fall.

High amount of sebum in the scalp clogs the pores of the scalp and prevents nutrients from reaching the hair follicle, resulting in hair loss.

Inadequate nutrition or unhealthy diet also causes hair fall.

Stress, worry, lack of sleep, and anxiety too cause hair fall.

Long-standing diseases like typhoid, viral infections, anaemia, surgery, etc. cause general debility which leads to hair fall.

Some medicines like birth-control pills, anti-depressants, etc., including those used for gout, during chemotherapy against cancer, etc. cause hair fall.

Diseases like lupus and diabetes also cause hair fall.

Tying hair tightly pulls the hair from the follicles and cause traction alopecia.

Heredity is also responsible for hair fall.

Dandruff or fungal infection of scalp causes hair fall.

Accumulation of dirt on scalp causes blocking of pores and weakens hair roots. This leads to hair fall.

Hair Loss Remedies

Hair loss, in general, can be stopped or reversed at home by taking some simple steps. However, in case of chronic alopecia, expert guidance is required

Always use a natural shampoo or soap (without too many chemicals) to clean the hair.

Oiling and massaging of the scalp is highly beneficial in preventing hair loss. Use coconut oil or mustard oil at least three times in a week. Certain medicated oils like Mahabhringraj oil, Amla oil, and Arnica oil are also very useful.

Ensure regular bowel movement everyday. In case of constipation, a mild natural laxative may be taken. One teaspoonful of Triphala powder can be taken at bedtime with warm water.

Rub your scalp vigourously after washing the hair. It increases the blood circulation and activates the sebaceous glands.

A paste of licorice made by grinding it in milk can be applied in the bald patches. It induces hair growth. A paste of the seeds of lemon and black pepper may also be applied on the bald patches.

Consume raw vegetables, fresh fruits, salads, and green leafy vegetables regularly.

Use relaxing techniques such as yoga, pranayama, etc. to overcome stress, anxiety and sleeplessness.

Avoid hairstyles which pull the hair and consequently damage it.

Do’s:

High protein diet like milk, buttermilk, soya bean, cheese, ghee, butter should be taken. Seeds, nuts and grains should also be taken on a regular basis. Seasonal fruits and vegetables should be consumed in sufficient amounts. Sprouts made from Moong or Chana dal are also recommended. In addition, taking food items that cool the body and living in a cool climate (especially in the summer) is very beneficial.

Dont’s

One should avoid pitta-aggravating diet such as fried, spicy and sour foods. Excess use of yogurt, pickles, tea, coffee, alcohol and non-vegetarian foods also increases pitta. Smoking should be avoided. White flour/white sugar products should be avoided. Junk foods, fast foods, or foods that contain artificial colours, flavours and preservatives should not be consumed regularly.

Hello ,

I need to know abt the psoriasis treatment in Ayurveda.
Please suggest…

Girish

Hi Girish,

According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis is due to imbalance of two doshas – Vata (Air) and Pitta (Fire). Vata and Pitta doshas manifest in the skin and cause accumulation of toxins. These toxins accumulate in deep tissues like rasa (nutrient plasma), rakta (blood), mansa (muscles), and lasika (lymphatic). These toxins cause contamination of deeper tissues, leading to Psoriasis.

Purification of blood and tissues is the primary aim of Ayurvedic treatment in cases of Psoriasis. Toxins are cleansed from the body and the digestion restored to prevent further accumulation. Nourishing herbs are then administered to strengthen and tone the tissues to promote complete healing of the skin.

Psoriasis is believed to occur due to vitiation of all the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) in varying degree, but predominantly Vata and Kapha according to the Ayurvedic concept.

The predominance of vatha causes pain, dryness and scaling of skin. Pitha vitiation leads to burning sensation, redness, inflammation etc and that of kapha causes rashes, itching, discharge, thickening of skin etc. From these signs and symptoms, the doshic involvement is analyzed carefully in each patient, which is of utmost importance in the management of this disease.

Irregular food habits, consumption of foodstuffs that are advised not to be eaten together (incompatible foods like dairy products with fish), excessive intake of yogurt, paneer, black gram, seafood, sour and salted items etc can activate the pathogenesis. The produced toxins accumulate in deep tissues like rasa (nutrient plasma), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscles), and laseeka (lymphatic). These toxins cause contamination of deeper tissues, leading to Psoriasis. Alcohol and tobacco consumption will act as a catalyst here. Ayurveda also emphasizes on the effect of stress in the pathogenesis of Psoriasis.

The vitiated doshas affect the skin and blood tissues. They also influence water element of the affected region on skin. Thus the skin which is influenced by affected doshas becomes discolored (white or copper colored), scaly and thin.

our treatment primarily focuses on blood purification and balancing the vitiated Doshas. Management of Psoriasis comprises of:

Shodhana chikitsa (Detoxification) through Panchakarma therapies,

BB ANEJA

Hi Aneja,

Eczema or dermatitis, as it is sometimes called, is a group of skin conditions, which can affect all age groups. The severity of the disease can vary. There is usually a family history of allergy, such as asthma, eczema, and hay fever. General physical debility predisposes one to eczema by lowering the resistance of the individual. Climatic extremes such as heat, dampness and severe cold, and also, psychological stress, promote the development of eczema. Local factors for example dry skin, greasy skin, excessive sweating, and varicose veins predispose to eczema. The signs and symptoms of paama and vicharchika, that are described in ayurveda, may be correlated with eczema or dermatitis.

Different Types

Atopic eczema is the commonest form of eczema and is closely linked with asthma and cold symptoms. It can affect both children and adults, usually running in families. It is proposed that people with atopic eczema are sensitive to allergens in the environment, which are harmless to others. In atopic type, there is excessive reaction by the immune system producing inflamed, irritated and sore skin. One of the most common symptoms of atopic eczema is its itchiness (or pruritus), which can be almost unbearable. Other symptoms include overall dryness of the skin, redness, and inflammation. Constant scratching can also cause the skin to split, leaving it prone to infection. In infected eczema, the skin may crack and weep (‘wet’ eczema).

Allergic contact dermatitis develops when the body’s immune system reacts against a substance in contact with the skin. The allergic reaction often develops over a period through repeated contact with the substance. For example, an allergic reaction may occur to nickel, which is often found in earrings, belt buckles and jeans buttons. Reactions can also occur after contact with perfumes, detergents, chemicals, rubber, and such other substances.

Infantile seborrhoetic eczema, is a common condition affecting babies under one year old, the exact cause of which is unknown. It usually starts on the scalp or the nappy area and quickly spreads. Although this type of eczema looks unpleasant, it is not sore or itchy and does not cause the baby to feel uncomfortable or unwell. Normally this type of eczema will clear in just a few months, though the use of medicated creams and bath oils can help to speed this along.

Adult seborrhoetic eczema characteristically affects adults between the ages of 20 and 40. It is usually seen on the scalp as mild dandruff, but can spread to the face, ears, and chest. The skin becomes red, inflamed and starts to flake. The condition is believed to be caused by the yeast or fungus growth.

This disease usually is constitutional, though as we have seen, it is sometimes due to local influences. No matter where the eczema may appear, it must be remembered that the poisons eliminated through these skin manifestations are carried by the blood; therefore, eczema is really a blood or constitutional disease, so it must be treated as such. The ordinary methods of treating this trouble, with external applications alone, will be inefficient in most instances.

Such treatment simply heals the surface sores without removing the constitutional cause. One should realise that this is a constitutional difficulty, and should proceed with an Ayurvedic blood purifying process, commencing with snehana (literally, ‘to oleate’ or ‘to make smooth, with oily preparations), swedana (to induce sweating by application of heat) and panchakarma (cleansing procedures—vamana, virechana, vasti, siro-virechana, and andrakata mokshana).

Guidelines

There are a number of ways to manage eczema all of which begin with an effective skin care routine.

Use a mild soap or no soap on the eczema. Warm starch bath in winter and cold plain water in summer helps a lot. After the bath, blot yourself with a smooth towel and avoid rubbing. If there is dryness of skin, an oil, butter or ghee massage for about an hour before a bath, helps lubricate and soften the skin. Do not take baths too often. Add olive oil to the water. In addition, take quick showers with warm (not hot) water. Washing your body with cold or warm water will help preserve your natural oils. Our skin is supposed to be slightly acidic, and soap removes this very important acid mantle because it is alkaline. The slight acidity of the skin protects us from bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

Avoid extremes of climate. Moderate temperature, with fresh air and the mild sun are usually beneficial.

Stay away from wool clothes and blankets.

Try to keep away from excessive sweating. For example, do not wear too many clothes.

Take light diet. Avoid allergenic foodstuffs like excessive salt, tea, coffee, alcohol, milk, eggs, cheese, fish, sugar, hot spices, and food additives.
Avoid cutting of vegetables especially garlic, onion, tomatoes, and ladies finger. Also, avoid peeling of oranges. Be cautious about marking nut, cashew nut, mustards, radish etc., as these may cause contact dermatitis. The same is true with hair dies, kumkum, lipstick, face creams, nail polish and remover, eyebrow pencil, perfumes, depilatories, deodorants and perfumed hair oils.

The other common offending substances are—rubber footwear, spectacle frames, furs, artificial jewellery, and synthetic clothes. Avoid contact with fluffy toys, grass, flowers and chemicals. Wear rubber gloves when you do housework. Put a little cornstarch inside the gloves. Alternatively, try latex gloves lined with cotton.

Do not fatigue yourself, either physically or mentally. Learn to live within the limits of your mental and physical strength, knowing your inborn weaknesses. It is a chronic but not a serious disease and, therefore, do not get depressed. Avoid anger, resentment, and frustration. Rest to the affected part is recommended; bed rest becomes necessary in generalised eczemas.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Apply the juice of the tender leaves of Terminalia catapa (Jangali badam) over the affected parts.

The emulsion made from Karanja tel (oil extracted from Pongamia pinnata seeds) and lemon juice is a very useful application.

Prepare ointment by boiling together one part of til oil (sesame oil), 16 parts of milky juice of Calotropics gigantica (Madaara or Arka or Jilledu) and one part of turmeric. Apply it externally.

One can expect cure by internal usage of tender leaves of Tephrossia purpurea (Sarapunkha) in the form of expressed juice for a longer period.
Pancha Tikta Ghrita Guggul—2 teaspoonfuls mixed in warm milk on empty stomach is an effective remedy for eczema.

Kadirarista, in the dose of 20 ml mixed with equal quantity of water, should be taken twice a day after meals.

Panchanimbaadi choornam half to one teaspoonful twice daily after meals, gives good results.

Mahaamanjistaadi kaada, Saaribaadyarishta, Gandhaka rasaayana are some of the specific medicines that are used internally. Externally, Mahaa-marichyaadi taila, Guduchyaadi tailam, are advised.

Thanks and regards
Paul

Hi Paul,

Ayurveda considers digestion to be the primary factor in the pathology of disease. In the case of psoriasis, a compromised digestive system leads to an increase of pitta dosha into rasa dhatu. Pitta dosha is an ayurvedic principle of physiology representing the energy of transformation in the body. Rasa dhatu is the first tissue created from the process of digestion and is akin to plasma, serum, white blood cells and the lymphatic system.

Lichen Planus is caused by vitiation of Vata and Kapha dosha. The vitiated doshas affect the skin and blood tissues. They also influence water element of the affected region on skin. Thus the skin which is influenced by affected doshas becomes discolored (Violet ), scaly and thin.
with new mature skin cells. According to ayurveda principles the vitiated vata dries the water element of skin and also initiate rapid growth of skin tissue. The vitiated Kapha dosha causes itching on the affected skin. The blood which is affected by vata and kapha adversely influences healing process

In treating lichen planus, ayurveda recommends a comprehensive treatment strategy that involves strengthening your digestion and detoxifying and eliminating toxins. Addressing your diet, and not only how you eat, but also when and what, is important. Herbal formulas support digestion and aid in the detoxifying process.

Ayurvedic treatment of lichen planus aims to rid the body of accumulated toxins. Ayurveda’s primary purification and detoxification method is a process known as panchakarma, which uses a combination of therapies to cleanse the body and balance the doshas. Panchakarma may include therapeutic vomiting, purgation, enema therapy and nasal cleansing, as well as the use of medicated oils and steam baths. After the detoxification process, patients undergo a period of rest that may involve a special diet
