Healthy snacks for five different occasions
Is there a greater joy than eating between meals? And now, contrary to the old rules about snacking being the greatest evil in a dieter’s diary, healthy snacking has become an important tool in the weight loss process.
The importance of snacking
As any nutritionist or person who’s lost weight the right way will tell you, the first rule of weight-loss is to never allow yourself to go hungry. Which is why it’s not only important to eat healthy and wholesome meals, it’s also crucial to make sure you don’t allow big gaps between meals.
That’s where smart and healthy snacking comes in. What you eat between meals is absolutely crucial: a handful of dry fruits is good, a deep-fried samosa – not so good!
Healthy snacks for 5 different occasions
To help you get your snacking on track, we have here different snack ideas for five different occasions.
The perfect snack for work – Take a break from work and indulge in a nice, fresh fruit – something seasonal is even better! If you’ve not had the time to go shopping for fruits, carry a bunch of nuts like almonds, walnuts and pistachios with you. They’re rich in good fats and also keep you full until your next meal.
The perfect snack for TV watching – When the mind is occupied by television, it’s natural for the mouth to feel a little lonely. But instead of reaching out for the nearest packet of chips, why not cut up some carrots and cucumbers and enjoy them with a curd or salsa dip? And if you’re in the mood to recreate the cinema experience at home, pop some corn to munch along. Just remember to keep the butter to an absolute minimal, and you’re good to go.
The perfect snack for a gossip session – Catching up with old friends? You’ll need more than just spicy stories to keep you going. Bring out some home made houmous and dig in with some pita bread. Delicious and wholesome, it’s the perfect accompaniment to all that fabulous gossip you’re sharing.
The perfect snack at midnight – We’ve all felt those midnight pangs at some point or the other. Watch out, because these can be particularly dangerous. Instead of sifting through the fridge for leftovers, have a glass of milk and you’ll feel satiated and sleep well. If it’s a bit of sweet you’re craving, try a piece of dark chocolate – it should just hit the spot.
The perfect snack after a workout – One of the biggest mistakes made by people trying to lose weight is to work out like crazy and follow it up with a super-fattening snack. Don’t do that! You’re just undoing all that work you put in over the last hour! So instead of going in for a heavy vada-pav, have a fruit smoothie instead. A banana smoothie is healthy and filling and so delicious! If you can’t get your hands on a smoothie, just grab a bowl of yoghurt and throw in some fresh fruit. The natural sugar in the fruit will replenish your energy and you’ll come out feeling happy and full.
